Education FAQs

In what order should I list my education?

Education should be listed in chronological order.

What types of information do I need to include about each school?

You must provide the following information for each university, college, and technical school attended: name, degree program, start date, and graduation date (if applicable).

Do I have to list every school I attended?

You must include all schools. Delays in processing your application will occur if all universities, colleges, and technical schools attended are not listed. You must include graduate work, evening school, and other education for which academic credit is given.

Why do you need information on where and when I went to high school?

Your graduation date is used to account for any time gaps. You must enter the information before you can continue.

Do I need to include training courses for which no academic credit is given?

No. Do not list training courses for which no academic credit is given. Examples include short courses, continuing education, and Army, Navy, or Air Force service schools.

Do I have to send an official transcript from each school?

Yes. Your Record cannot be completed until all necessary official transcripts are received. Official transcripts must be received directly from the institution. They will not be accepted from any other source. This includes those in a sealed envelope that you may have in your possession.

How do I request official transcripts?

Official transcript requests are part of the Records application process. Follow the instructions and prompts within the system as appropriate.

I already have a copy of my transcript. Can I submit it as part of the application process?

No. Official transcripts must be received directly from the institution. They will not be accepted from any other source. This includes those in a sealed envelope that you may have in your possession.

Does my official transcript have to be in English?

Yes. If official documents cannot be provided in English, a translation from a certified translation company is required and must be returned directly to NCEES. Original language documents must still arrive to NCEES directly from the institution.

My original licensing board has copies of my transcripts. Can I just use those?

No. NCEES must receive official transcripts directly from the institution.

I earned a degree that is not EAC/ABET-accredited. What do I need to do?

If you earned a degree outside of the United States from a program that is not EAC/ABET-accredited, you must have your educational background evaluated by the NCEES Credentials Evaluations Service, which is the only service accepted by all state licensing boards. Evaluations performed by any other service will not be accepted.

The NCEES Credentials Evaluations Service is a separate service in MyNCEES, with a separate application process and fee. Click here for instructions on how to apply for an evaluation as part of the Records application process. (link to hidden instructions only for Records applicants) To avoid delays in processing your Records application, make sure you begin the Credentials Evaluation process as soon as possible.

Regardless of where your degree was earned, if it is not EAC/ABET-accredited, it may not meet the licensure requirements established by each licensing board. Requirements and procedures vary by jurisdiction. You should review a state board's requirements prior to submitting an application and/or transmittal request to determine if your education meets the requirements. An NCEES Record does not guarantee licensure in any jurisdiction.
